The Urla Vineyard Route, and what each season brings

Short answer

The Urla Vineyard Route came about in 2016, when producers in the region brought their vineyard houses together along a single route. Which season suits you depends on what you are after: spring belongs to artichokes, summer to the cove, autumn to the harvest, winter to empty streets. We are open year-round.

The Vineyard Route: not a new fashion but an interrupted old habit

Viticulture in Urla was not invented recently. In 2016 producers in the region came together and gathered their vineyard houses along a single route; what emerged was a road winding between sea-facing valleys, olive groves and the smell of pine.

Most of the vineyard houses are small and work by appointment. That is not a shortcoming but the scale itself — though it changes how you plan: call ahead rather than turning up at the gate.

Spring: artichokes

Urla wakes in spring with its artichoke fields. The international artichoke festival held each year by the Urla Municipality falls in the same season.

The festival dates shift from year to year, so we do not print a fixed one here — it would be wrong within a year. Check the municipality’s announcement before you come.

Summer belongs to the cove, autumn to the vines

Summer is the season of the cove: long days, warm water, and a beach day that assembles itself. That long day — sand in the morning, a table at noon — is easiest in these months.

Autumn is the harvest. The crowds thin, the light softens, and the vineyard route is at its best.

Winter: the town is yours

In winter half the shops are open, the streets are empty, and the sea is rough and beautiful. For anyone who wants the town without the crowd, this is the most honest season of the year.

We are open year-round. Coming in winter is not a compromise; it is a different choice.

Call before you go

Even we cannot track week by week which vineyard gate is open on which day. Call ahead; or ask at reception and we will find out how things stand that day and tell you.

Information ages. An opening time frozen on a page is decoration that helps nobody.
